Susan PERERA

Candidate for Ward 1, Ahuntsic-Cartierville and Montreal North

Susan Perera has been a passionate advocate for inclusivity and community involvement from a young age. One of her most recent roles was with the Best Buddies program at Concordia University, where she built meaningful friendships and championed the rights and inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As part of the Executive Team, Susan helped plan and organize events, fostering a spirit of friendship, inclusion, and community—values that continue to shape her commitment to advocating for the English-speaking community.

Currently, as a Political Science student at Concordia University, Susan is running as a candidate for School Commissioner in Ward 1. Her platform centers on promoting bilingualism as a tool for bridging cultural gaps and ensuring that both French and English-speaking residents in Montreal can thrive equally. Susan believes that fostering bilingualism strengthens community bonds and allows residents to participate fully in the city’s diverse cultural landscape.

Her dedication to public service extends back to her high school days, where she served as President of the Student Council and Vice-President of the Students Association at the School Board level. In these roles, Susan tackled key issues such as mental health, increasing school retention rates, and sustainability projects. She also organized cultural events that promoted a sense of belonging, unity, and school pride—helping students feel more connected to their school community.

At Concordia University, Susan continued her engagement by joining several school associations, devoting much of her time outside of her studies to volunteering. Her passion for education has only deepened, and she believes that education is the foundation of opportunity. Ensuring equal access to quality education in a diverse, multilingual society like Montreal is a privilege, but also a profound responsibility—one that Susan is eager to uphold as part of Team Joe Ortona.

If elected as School Commissioner, Susan Perera will:

Advocate for bilingualism and ensure that English-speaking communities have strong representation.
Prioritize mental health and student well-being, ensuring that schools provide the necessary support systems.
Promote sustainable initiatives within schools to create greener, more eco-friendly environments.
Susan is ready to bring her energy, passion, and leadership experience to the EMSB, and she is committed to working tirelessly for the betterment of the entire community.
