Joe ORTONA

Chair

Joe Ortona has been a dedicated advocate for education and the rights of the English-speaking community in Quebec for years. As Chair of the English Montreal School Board, he has led with passion and a clear vision for inclusivity, academic excellence, and fairness. Under his leadership, the EMSB has been a key voice in challenging laws like Bill 21, 40, and 96, advocating for the preservation of constitutional rights and educational freedoms.

 

Born into a family of educators—both of Joe’s parents were teachers—his dedication to the school system runs deep. He was first elected as a school commissioner in 2014, quickly establishing a reputation for advocating for students, staff, and the community at large. In 2020, Joe became Chair of the EMSB, and his leadership has been marked by a focus on mental health initiatives, academic innovation, and promoting diversity within the schools. His efforts have been instrumental in spearheading legal challenges all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, protecting minority language rights and the integrity of the EMSB.

Joe’s commitment to serving the English-speaking population extends beyond legal battles. He has emphasized sustainable growth in education, environmental awareness, and improved mental health services in schools. His campaign for re-election is based on continuity and progress—ensuring that the EMSB remains a strong advocate for the community while continually adapting to new challenges.
