Antisemitism
The EMSB has taken several important steps to combat anti-Semitism and promote a safe, inclusive environment for Jewish students and the broader community. Here’s a list of key initiatives and actions:
1. Adoption of IHRA Definition of Anti-Semitism
In December 2021, the EMSB became the first Quebec school board to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism. This comprehensive definition provides a clear framework for identifying and addressing acts of anti-Semitism within schools and the broader community.
2. Educational Programs and Workshops
The EMSB regularly collaborates with Jewish organizations to provide educational programs on anti-Semitism, Holocaust education, and cultural awareness. Programs such as classroom workshops, guest speakers, and special events raise awareness among students about Jewish history, the Holocaust, and the dangers of hate speech and prejudice.
3. Holocaust Education Initiatives
The EMSB actively promotes Holocaust education across its schools. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Montreal Holocaust Museum, students are exposed to lessons about the Holocaust, fostering empathy and understanding. Schools often participate in Holocaust memorial days and special events that commemorate the atrocities of World War II, ensuring that this history is never forgotten.
4. Zero Tolerance for Hate Speech and Discrimination
The EMSB enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for any form of hate speech, including anti-Semitic behavior. Schools have clear guidelines for addressing and resolving incidents of discrimination, bullying, or harassment. Educators and administrators are trained to identify and address anti-Semitic behaviors swiftly and effectively.
5. Partnership with Jewish Community Organizations
The EMSB works closely with Jewish community organizations such as Federation CJA, B’nai Brith, and other local Jewish institutions. This collaboration helps to ensure that the concerns of Jewish families are heard and addressed. Additionally, these partnerships provide valuable resources for the board, including educational materials, training, and guidance on addressing anti-Semitism.
6. Commemoration of Jewish Heritage and Events
The EMSB promotes the celebration of Jewish culture and religious observances. Schools organize events and activities around Jewish holidays such as Hanukkah and Rosh Hashanah, recognizing the cultural contributions of the Jewish community. This inclusion fosters a positive and respectful environment for Jewish students.
7. Diversity and Inclusion Training for Staff
Teachers and staff members receive ongoing training on diversity and inclusion, with a focus on combating discrimination, including anti-Semitism. This professional development ensures that educators are equipped to foster respectful, inclusive classrooms where students feel safe and supported.
8. Safe and Inclusive School Policies
The EMSB has established policies to ensure that all students, including Jewish students, feel safe and protected in school. The board encourages an open dialogue between parents, students, and administration to promptly address concerns about anti-Semitism or any other form of discrimination.
9. Support for Victims of Discrimination
The EMSB provides support for any student or staff member who experiences anti-Semitism or discrimination. This includes counseling services, mediation, and other interventions designed to protect the individual and ensure a positive school environment.
10. Public Statements Condemning Anti-Semitism
The EMSB has publicly condemned acts of anti-Semitism, both in schools and in the broader community. By taking a firm stance in support of the Jewish community, the board reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that hate has no place in its institutions.
