Anti-Racism

The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) has undertaken various initiatives and implemented measures to combat racism and promote diversity and inclusion within its schools. Here are some key actions the EMSB has taken:

1. Anti-Racism Task Force
In response to growing concerns about systemic racism, the EMSB created an Anti-Racism Task Force in 2020. The task force consists of educators, administrators, and community leaders, working together to identify, address, and eliminate racism within the school system.
The Task Force reviews policies and practices and provides recommendations for creating more inclusive school environments.

2. Diversity and Inclusion Training
EMSB staff, including teachers, administrators, and support staff, have participated in diversity and anti-racism training. These workshops and programs aim to raise awareness about unconscious bias, systemic racism, and the importance of fostering an inclusive culture.
Special training is provided for dealing with issues related to bullying, harassment, and discrimination in a school setting.

3. Revised Curriculum for Cultural Representation
The EMSB has updated certain parts of its curriculum to reflect the contributions of diverse communities, including the history and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and other marginalized groups.
Literature and history lessons include more representation of different cultures and historical experiences, particularly those of marginalized communities.

4. Cultural Awareness Initiatives
EMSB schools celebrate events such as Black History Month, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and other cultural awareness programs that promote understanding and celebrate diversity.
Guest speakers, workshops, and school-wide events help educate students and staff about the cultural heritage and challenges faced by different communities.

5. Policy Reforms
The EMSB has taken steps to review and revise policies related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. This includes a review of its disciplinary policies to ensure they are not disproportionately affecting racialized students.
Policies have been adapted to create a more inclusive environment for students from various racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

6. Hiring Practices
The EMSB has committed to increasing the diversity of its teaching staff and administration to better reflect the diversity of the student population. The board has worked on initiatives to ensure fair hiring practices and encourage the hiring of staff from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds.

7. Support for Marginalized Students
The EMSB provides specific programs and resources to support students from marginalized communities. This includes mentorship programs, access to counselors, and resources tailored to the specific needs of racialized students.
Mental health and wellness services are also geared towards addressing the unique challenges that minority students may face in school settings.

8. Anti-Bullying and Harassment Policies
The EMSB has reinforced its anti-bullying and anti-harassment policies, ensuring that any incidents of racism or discrimination are dealt with promptly and effectively.
Students and parents have access to reporting tools to safely report any incidents of racism, and there are clear procedures for addressing such complaints.

9. Engagement with Community Groups
The EMSB collaborates with local community organizations that advocate for racial equality, diversity, and inclusion. These partnerships help the board stay connected with issues affecting the broader community and foster a sense of inclusion and belonging for all students.
Engagement with parents and community leaders is a key part of ensuring that the board remains responsive to the needs of its diverse population.

10. Student-Led Initiatives
EMSB has encouraged the development of student-led clubs and groups that promote diversity and inclusivity, such as cultural clubs, diversity councils, and anti-racism initiatives.
Students are given the opportunity to voice their experiences and concerns regarding racism, creating a platform for dialogue and action.

11. Review of School Names and Symbols
In alignment with efforts to promote inclusivity, the EMSB has begun reviewing school names, symbols, and mascots to ensure that they do not perpetuate colonialist or racist ideals.
This process is part of a broader effort to create school environments that are welcoming and inclusive for all students.

12. Anti-Racism Resource Portal
The EMSB has developed an online portal for students, parents, and teachers with resources on combating racism and promoting diversity. This includes reading materials, videos, and access to relevant community organizations and services.
These initiatives reflect the EMSB’s commitment to creating a safe, equitable, and inclusive environment for all students and staff members. The board continues to assess and update its policies and practices to ensure that it is doing everything possible to combat racism within its schools.
